Documented information

What is the difference between maintained and retained information?

In practice two kinds are distinguished. “Maintained” information, such as procedures and work instructions, is kept current and versioned when changed. “Retained” information, such as records, is evidence that something happened and is not altered. The standard does not make a document with a particular name, such as “SOP”, mandatory; the organization decides what is needed given its own conditions. Ask your certification body about your case.
